Voice of Kindness
Every person longs to be understood and validated, especially in times of struggle. In the same way crises in people’s lives come in stages, waves, or layers, kindness can counter the crises at all levels. God’s kindness has the power to restore resilience in those facing crises. God will use willing and available people to show His kindness. Your voice of kindness might plant the seed of hope during one phase of someone’s journey, while another person may help soften the impact of adverse circumstances. Someone else might provide a fresh perspective amid layers of conflict. Your presence—sometimes even your silence—can be a guiding light, leading a friend toward safety.
When we learn to cultivate God’s kindness in our lives, we become attuned to recognizing when someone needs help. We can then offer support and be there for them. Kindness possesses a transformative power; as we extend it to others, we often find our own healing. I believe the church, as a community of born-again believers, has a vital role in promoting resilience, safety and hope.
How can we do this? By participating in targeted training programs that equip us to respond effectively. The initial course curriculum aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Think 3-2-1 Crisis Intervention Strategy and the BE KIND Model. This is followed by a course titled The Spectrum of Resilience, which fosters a healthy balance of intervention, prevention, and postvention strategies. Additional training will include understanding the role of the church, the Safety Peace Plan and Breaking the Stigma. The training will be held monthly on a Saturday morning with location to be determined (TBD). All training are designed with a biblical perspective. Participants will receive a certificate upon completing the course.
We're tragically losing loved ones to suicide, yet Suicide has a strong stigma that keeps people from having normal conversations about the topic. Why? Because the thought that we might have to intervene is quite frightening. There are so many uncertainties when dealing with someone that may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis.
The Initial Workshop:
THINK 3-2-1 and The BE KIND MODEL
Dr. Dolores Gaviola-Feck is a seasoned educator, published author, and a leader in crisis intervention with over 45 years of combined military and civilian service. She holds a Doctorate in Education (2016) and a Master’s degree in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology (2010). Her career includes extensive work with the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Energy (DoE), and the Department of the Interior (DoI), providing her with a diverse range of organizational and leadership experience. Additionally, Dr. Gaviola-Feck is a certified and ordained minister of the International Fellowship of Chaplains (IFOC) and has served as a volunteer community chaplain specializing in suicide prevention and crisis response. Her volunteer efforts include deployments with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BGRRT) to provide chaplain services during natural and man-made disasters.
Dr. Gaviola-Feck’s multifaceted background in education, crisis intervention, and chaplaincy uniquely equips her to design and deliver the Voice of Kindness program—a practical, compassionate approach to crisis intervention, especially targeting suicide ideation.
Proposed Core Areas:
Resiliency and Life Skills
Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention
Cognitive Behavioral Health
Enhancing Relationships and Connectedness
Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Health
Workshop Materials
Suicide ideation (seeds in the mind), born from unbearable pain, afflicts many, but it doesn't have to end in tragedy. We can stem this heartbreaking tide by rallying together as compassionate crisis interventionists and save precious lives. Prevention reduces the risk of suicide, intervention may preserve a life, and postvention supports healing after a suicide loss.
The Voice of Kindness for your church, organization, school, or agency
The Voice of Kindness: A Crisis Intervention Strategy and create a climate of learning that helps individuals identify solutions for well-being. By reducing barriers to dialogue and stigma associated with seeking help, and instilling means to practice kindness God’s way, a spiritual awakening occurs that can lead someone to safety.
FEEDBACK
“This was an outstanding training! The strategies of 3C’s are great tools to implement during crisis intervention. I really like the idea of 2 mnemonics: BE KIND and REST. The way you break them down and give examples to use them are going to be extremely helpful.”
“I really loved all the steps and ways to approach a person in crisis. It gave both a chance to come to a solution together. It makes both people engaged and focused.”
“I especially liked the empathy and coming up with a plan. I think they are so important. People need a reason to live and move from their problems, knowing that all problems are temporary and one day is different from the next.”
“We need more people to become crisis interventionist and get involved and learn and apply what they have learned especially to those in contact with hard times.”
